A TRAVEL COLLABORATION / SINGAPORE 新加坡 & INDONESIA

Indonesia
By rail, sea & sky.

Temple stone. Volcano mornings. Island color. A rainforest horizon.

The brief was a journey into Indonesia’s variety: begin in Singapore 新加坡, cross Java by train, make room for Yogyakarta and Mount Bromo, then follow the water to Bali and Lombok before exploring East Kalimantan.

I shaped the route around the changes of scene and the people who give each place its character. Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu places, regional food, a comfortable beach stay and present-day Dayak Kenyah culture belong to the same journey.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE JOURNEY

A colorful country deserves a journey with range.

I wanted the trip to feel connected as well as adventurous. The long train journeys have their own days; the two great temple visits sit alongside time for Yogyakarta itself; Bromo has a Malang base and recovery time. Bali gets four full days, followed by three nights at a luxury beach retreat in Lombok.

The final chapter looks toward Indonesian Borneo: protected rainforest near Balikpapan, coastal water, Samarinda’s river-city life and a visit arranged with Dayak Kenyah hosts at Pampang. The illustrated scenes follow these changes of place, from city streets and temple stone to island water and rainforest.

A proposed collaboration, not a confirmed booking. This 24-day sequence includes Singapore’s arrival day, two full Yogyakarta days and four full Bali days. Flights, trains, hotels, boats, entry arrangements and community visits are selected for actual travel dates.

IN TRAVEL ORDER

Follow the islands. Then turn toward Borneo.

Singapore 新加坡 → Jakarta → Yogyakarta → Malang & Bromo → Banyuwangi → Bali → Lombok → Balikpapan → Samarinda → Balikpapan → Singapore 新加坡.

The conventional Java–Bali ferry crosses from Ketapang to Gilimanuk in western Bali, followed by a road transfer. The Bali–Lombok ferry chapter uses Padangbai–Lembar, with a separate transfer to the resort. I plan the whole connection, including the journey between port and hotel.

23 nights: Singapore 新加坡 2; Jakarta 1; Yogyakarta 3; Malang 3; Banyuwangi 1; Bali 5; Lombok 3; Balikpapan 2; Samarinda 2; Balikpapan 1. If you want two full Singapore 新加坡 days after arrival, add an arrival night. An extra Singapore 新加坡 night at the end may also suit the onward flights.

DAY01

Singapore 新加坡 / arrival

Begin with the city at street level.

Arrive in Singapore 新加坡 and settle into a well-connected hotel. I keep the first day flexible around the actual flight: a neighborhood walk, a good meal and enough rest to enjoy what comes next.

Depending on arrival time, start around the Singapore 新加坡 River or choose one compact neighborhood. A hawker meal is a useful introduction to the city’s range of Chinese, Malay, Indian and other food traditions.

STAY · Singapore 新加坡
Singapore 新加坡 — streets & stories
DAY02

Singapore 新加坡 / day two

Make room for more than the skyline.

Give the second day to Singapore’s neighborhoods: Kampong Glam, Little India and Chinatown offer different streets, food and places of worship. I would choose a manageable sequence and a local guide where useful context adds depth.

Balance those walks with an afternoon pause or gardens, then finish with a dinner chosen around the traveler’s interests. The next day is for the flight into Java.

STAY · Singapore 新加坡
DAY03

Singapore 新加坡 → Jakarta / flight

Enter Java through Jakarta.

Fly to Jakarta, with the airport transfer and hotel night planned around the selected service. I keep the intercity train on the following day so an international arrival does not have to connect tightly with a railway departure.

If timing allows, make a short introduction to Kota Tua or a neighborhood food stop. Otherwise, arrive, eat and rest. Jakarta deserves more time on a longer version; here it provides a deliberate bridge into the rail journey.

STAY · Jakarta
Java By Rail — jakarta to yogyakarta
DAY04

Jakarta → Yogyakarta / rail

Let the landscape become part of the trip.

Take the train across Java to Yogyakarta. I would compare the actual service, station, seat class and daylight hours, then arrange both hotel transfers around that booking.

This is a travel day with a window, rather than a temple day squeezed around a train. After arrival, choose a gentle walk and a first taste of gudeg, Yogyakarta’s young-jackfruit dish, if it suits the evening.

STAY · Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta — lanes, craft & flavor
DAY05

Yogyakarta base / Borobudur

Give Borobudur its own morning.

Travel out to Borobudur, the Buddhist monument in Central Java near Magelang. A guide can help connect the terraces, reliefs and stupas with the ideas expressed in its architecture. I would confirm the right entry product before promising access onto the structure.

Return with time for Yogyakarta itself: a café, a market lane or a relaxed introduction to local craft. I would build the timing around the selected temple entry and the traveler’s interests, so the visit has room to breathe.

STAY · Yogyakarta
Borobudur — stone, light & stillness
DAY06

Yogyakarta base / Prambanan & the city

Temple towers, then a city with its own charm.

Visit Prambanan’s Hindu temple compounds on the second full Yogyakarta day. Look closely at the tower forms and carved narrative detail, with interpretation that gives the stone more meaning than a quick photograph.

Keep the other part of the day for the city. I would choose between palace-area streets, a batik introduction or Kotagede’s craft traditions according to opening arrangements and interest. Leave room for gudeg and the pleasure of an unhurried evening.

STAY · Yogyakarta
Prambanan — java's hindu temples
DAY07

Yogyakarta → Malang / rail

Continue east, with a comfortable landing.

Travel by train to Malang. I treat the arrival, luggage and hotel collection as part of the plan, with an easy dinner and no overnight mountain excursion attached to a late rail arrival.

The extra Malang day that follows is intentional: it gives the city some attention and creates a more comfortable lead-in to Bromo.

STAY · Malang
DAY08

Malang / architecture, food & faith

Notice the life around the square.

Spend a day with Malang’s streets, public squares and architecture. The main-square mosque offers a way to understand Islam as part of daily life, alongside the city’s other places of worship. Visitor access follows the mosque’s own guidance.

I would leave time for local food and a quiet afternoon before the early Bromo departure. The mosque illustration below has an optional adhan recording from Ternate, elsewhere in Indonesia. Press play to listen; the recording is a separate field recording, not sound captured at the pictured Malang mosque.

STAY · Malang
Malang — the call to prayer

ISLAM / A MOMENT TO LISTEN

The call to prayer.

The adhan calls Muslims to prayer. Listen to an evening field recording from Ternate, Indonesia, while viewing the illustrated mosque scene from Malang.

This is a separate field recording from Ternate. Press play when you want to listen, or open the artwork to use the listening slide.

Audio: Sunset Adhan (call-to-prayer) – Ternate, Indonesia by RTB45 / Freesound, CC BY 4.0. Full-length MP3, unedited. A separate field recording from Ternate; the illustration depicts Malang.

DAY09

Malang → Mount Bromo → Malang

A volcano morning, with time to recover.

Arrange a return Bromo excursion from Malang, with a driver, the required park arrangements and appropriate local transport. A sunrise version begins very late the previous night or before dawn; I would agree that early start before finalizing the day.

The landscape gives this chapter its scale: ridged volcanic slopes, a broad caldera and changing light. The exact viewpoints and walking depend on current access and conditions. Return to Malang and keep the afternoon for rest, rather than adding the eastbound train to the same day.

STAY · Malang
Mount Bromo — first light over java
DAY10

Malang → Banyuwangi / rail

Follow the railway toward the strait.

Take the next rail leg toward Banyuwangi and the Ketapang gateway. I would choose the exact service and arrival station around the following morning’s port transfer, rather than treating every Banyuwangi-area station as interchangeable.

Stay overnight, settle in and leave the crossing for the next day. It is a small pause that makes the change from train to ferry much easier to organize.

STAY · Banyuwangi area
DAY11

Banyuwangi → Ketapang → Gilimanuk → Bali

Cross to Bali, then continue by road.

Transfer to Ketapang port for the ferry to Gilimanuk in western Bali. From there, continue by road to the Bali base. Denpasar is not the arrival port for this conventional crossing; the onward road journey needs its own time and transport.

Keep this as an arrival-and-transfer day. The four full Bali days begin tomorrow, with five Bali nights in total so the island is not reduced to the gaps between boats.

STAY · Ubud area, Bali
Island Crossings — java, bali & lombok
DAY12

Bali / full day one / Ubud

Find the island in its everyday details.

Begin around Ubud with art, village streets and an introduction to Balinese Hindu traditions. A local guide can explain the courtyards, offerings and temple spaces that a visitor might otherwise pass without understanding.

Make regional food part of the day: a market introduction or a meal with Balinese dishes, selected around dietary preferences. I would keep the afternoon open enough to enjoy the hotel, a gallery or another walk.

STAY · Ubud area, Bali
DAY13

Bali / full day two / temple & rice country

Water, worship and the landscape between.

Plan a guided visit to Tirta Empul and the surrounding rice-country landscape, with the visit shaped by temple guidance and the traveler’s interests. Dress and permitted access matter because this is a living place of worship.

Participation in a water ritual is a personal choice, not a required attraction. I would arrange the day so it is rewarding simply to observe, learn and walk, with time for a proper lunch and smaller stops along the way.

STAY · Ubud area, Bali
Bali — water & living traditions
DAY14

Bali / full day three / the mountains

Turn inland toward the high country.

Take a separate mountain-country day toward Bedugul and Lake Beratan, including Ulun Danu Beratan when access and conditions suit. Keep the route focused, rather than trying to cross every part of Bali in one long drive.

A driver and guide make room to discuss the landscape, temple setting and agricultural life along the way. Leave space to stop, look and enjoy a mountain-country lunch, with the final stops chosen around conditions and the traveler’s interests.

STAY · Ubud area, Bali
Bali Highlands — rice fields & mountain air
DAY15

Bali / full day four / Denpasar & the coast

Finish the Bali chapter at a slower pace.

Use the fourth full day for the Denpasar and Sanur side of the island, with a market or cultural stop chosen around opening hours and a coastal afternoon. A change to a Sanur-area base can support the next morning’s port transfer.

Keep a final Balinese meal and a little beach time in the day. I would confirm the next boat and land transfers before departure, leaving the final evening easy.

STAY · Sanur / Denpasar area, Bali
DAY16

Bali → Lombok / ferry & road

Make the crossing, then settle into the beach stay.

For the conventional ferry route, travel by road to Padangbai, cross to Lembar on Lombok and transfer to the chosen beach retreat. A different boat itinerary would be selected only after checking its actual landing point and the resort location.

This is the first of three Lombok nights. I would compare the beach itself, room setting, food, privacy and transfer time as carefully as the hotel’s photographs. The beach-retreat illustration expresses the intended atmosphere; the actual property is selected around the traveler and dates.

STAY · Lombok luxury beach retreat
DAY17

Lombok / beach day

Let the lovely stay be part of the journey.

Keep a full day for sand, shade and the pleasure of a good resort. A comfortable room, a long breakfast and time beside the water can be exactly what belongs between Java’s rail journeys and the Kalimantan chapter.

I would choose a property around the kind of beach experience you actually want, including water access and seasonal conditions. There is no need to fill every hour to make the day worthwhile.

STAY · Lombok luxury beach retreat
Lombok — sand, shade & slow days
DAY18

Lombok / a second unhurried day

Stay close, or follow a little curiosity.

Enjoy another day at the retreat, with an optional short outing if the traveler wants one. A coastal drive or a local food introduction can fit without turning the day into a long checklist.

Ayam taliwang, grilled chicken with a distinctive chili-based seasoning, and plecing kangkung offer a different food chapter from Bali and Java. I would select the meal around appetite and dietary needs, then confirm tomorrow’s airport transfer.

STAY · Lombok luxury beach retreat
DAY19

Lombok → Balikpapan / flight

Fly toward Indonesian Borneo.

Fly from Lombok to Balikpapan, with a connection if the actual dated services require it. I reserve the day for travel and make the airport collection and hotel arrival clear before leaving Lombok.

Balikpapan is the gateway for this East Kalimantan chapter. After arrival, keep the evening simple and prepare for the change from island coast to forest and river-city travel.

STAY · Balikpapan
DAY20

Balikpapan base / protected rainforest

Walk beneath a different kind of skyline.

Arrange a guided forest visit around Sungai Wain, with current access and permissions confirmed locally. This protected lowland forest introduces the depth and complexity of Kalimantan’s rainforest landscapes.

I would choose the walk around the traveler’s comfort and interests: canopy, forest sounds, plant life and the work of conservation. Time with a knowledgeable guide can make the smaller details as rewarding as the tall trees.

STAY · Balikpapan
Kalimantan — beneath the rainforest canopy
DAY21

Balikpapan → Samarinda / road

Meet a river city within the green landscape.

Travel by road to Samarinda, allowing for the hotel-to-hotel journey rather than quoting only the toll-road driving time. Spend the afternoon around the Mahakam riverfront and selected city streets.

The attraction is a living regional city shaped by river trade and the forests around it. I would include time for food, shops and public spaces, with a local guide to connect the wider landscape to contemporary urban life.

STAY · Samarinda
Samarinda — city on the mahakam
DAY22

Samarinda base / Pampang

Visit on the community’s terms.

Arrange a visit with Dayak Kenyah hosts at Pampang, near Samarinda. Dayak encompasses many Indigenous peoples; naming the local community is a useful beginning to learning about its particular traditions and present-day life.

The program might include architecture, craft, conversation or a public cultural presentation, depending on hosts’ availability. A performance is not guaranteed on every day. I would align this visit with the community calendar, agree photography arrangements and leave space to buy directly from makers if desired.

STAY · Samarinda
Pampang — dayak kenyah culture
DAY23

Samarinda → Balikpapan / coastal finish

Return to the coast before the flight.

Return by road to Balikpapan and keep the final night near the departure gateway. If the drive and the traveler’s energy allow, add a coastal outlook or a relaxed seafood meal.

This final night gives the international departure some breathing room. I would keep the exact coastal stop flexible so it supports the journey rather than creating another rushed transfer.

STAY · Balikpapan
DAY24

Balikpapan → Singapore 新加坡 / onward travel

Bring the journey back to its beginning.

Fly back to Singapore 新加坡 and connect onward when the confirmed timings allow. I would compare the connection as a whole, including separate-ticket arrangements, baggage and any necessary overnight.

An additional Singapore 新加坡 night can be the right finish if the flights do not line up comfortably. The route closes where it began, with Java’s stone, Bali’s color, Lombok’s coast and Kalimantan’s forest still distinct in the memory.

DEPART · Singapore 新加坡 connection or an extra overnight

MANY WAYS OF BELONGING

Faith is part of the landscape of daily life.

Islam belongs in this story through the mosque, prayer spaces, food and the rhythm of everyday travel. Buddhist Borobudur, Hindu Prambanan and predominantly Hindu Bali bring other traditions into view. Indonesia’s diversity is something to understand in specific places, rather than flatten into one national image.

I would choose guides who can explain local practice, confirm how visitors are welcomed at each place of worship and help us ask better questions. The optional call-to-prayer recording is a listening invitation, not background music that starts on its own.

AT THE TABLE

Different islands. Different reasons to sit down.

Singapore 新加坡 begins the journey with hawker food. Yogyakarta introduces gudeg, while Malang offers its own city meals before the mountain excursion. In Bali, I would make room for local dishes and market context rather than treating every lunch as a quick stop between temples.

Lombok brings ayam taliwang and vegetable dishes such as plecing kangkung; Kalimantan adds river- and coast-oriented meals chosen with local advice. Preferences and dietary needs shape the selections, so curiosity remains enjoyable at the table.

EAST KALIMANTAN / LIVING CULTURES

People, craft and a present tense.

Pampang’s painted timber architecture, beadwork and social life deserve more than a passing look. I would arrange a hosted visit with time to listen, learn and understand the particular Dayak Kenyah community welcoming us.

Samarinda, Pampang and the protected forest are different settings. This chapter brings them together without treating a community as an exhibit or the rainforest as an empty backdrop. Listen, ask before portraits and give the encounter time.

THE WORK BEHIND THE JOURNEY

The groundwork.

Make the whole chain work

I would confirm the international gateway flights first, then connect the Java rail days, both sea crossings, Lombok’s airport and the Kalimantan road loop. Exact stations, ports, hotel collection points and luggage transfers belong in the final itinerary. No sample train time or historical route announcement substitutes for dated availability.

Keep the promised days available

This version gives Yogyakarta two full sightseeing days and Bali four full days, with their travel days outside those blocks. Singapore 新加坡 has two calendar days including arrival. To make those two full days after landing, I would add an arrival night. Lombok has three nights and two full days for the luxury stay.

Choose useful comfort

The hotel comparisons would consider location, vehicle access, room setting and the next transfer as well as style. In Lombok, the beach, tide conditions and journey from the actual port deserve particular attention. No resort is booked or pictured as a confirmed stay on this page.

Arrange the temples, forest and Bromo properly

I would confirm temple ticket categories, guiding and current access. Bromo needs its own park and local-transport arrangements, an agreed early start and recovery time. The forest day needs a knowledgeable local guide and current permissions. The final route follows actual visitor access and conditions.

Plan a hosted cultural visit

Pampang’s community program helps determine the order of the Samarinda days. I would agree the visit with hosts, check whether a presentation is happening, and clarify any photography requests or charges. There is no promise of private ceremonies, unrestricted home access or particular people being present.
