A TRAVEL COLLABORATION / INLAND CHINA
Yunnan Province 云南
A different rhythm.
Stone forests. Lake-country villages. A table worth stopping for.
The client wanted to venture into China, away from the coast. I shaped the journey around Yunnan 云南: Kunming’s limestone landscapes, Dali’s lakeside setting and the old towns and villages around Lijiang 丽江.
The route connects three bases by rail, with local drivers where they make the day easier. Architecture, history and regional food give each stop its own character.
Explore the tripTHE IDEA BEHIND THE JOURNEY
Head inland. Get to know a place.
The brief started with curiosity about another part of China. I wanted the journey to make sense on the ground: time among Shilin’s stone pinnacles, a courtyard or a lakeside walk in Dali 大理 country, and smaller streets to follow around Lijiang 丽江.
I built the five full sightseeing days in the artwork into a clear sequence, with space for the arrivals, station transfers and meals that connect them. The illustrated food collection helps introduce what might be on the table along the way.
An illustrated client-trip proposal. The five sightseeing days are shown in travel order; actual dates, flights, hotels, train services and reservations are arranged around the final trip.
IN TRAVEL ORDER
Kunming 昆明 to Dali 大理 to Lijiang 丽江.
Arrive in Kunming 昆明 the evening before Day 1. Follow the five sightseeing days north through Dali 大理 and Lijiang 丽江, then depart the morning after Day 5.

Six nights: two in Kunming 昆明, two in Dali 大理 and two in Lijiang 丽江. Arrival and departure sit outside the five numbered sightseeing days. A flight that arrives on Day 1 needs an adjusted plan.
Kunming 昆明 / Shilin 石林 Stone Forest
Walk into the Stone Forest.
After the previous evening’s arrival, give Shilin 石林 the main part of the day. Its limestone pinnacles are part of the South China Karst World Heritage landscape. A local guide can help connect the geology with the region’s Sani Yi cultural context.
I would arrange a return car or suitable day tour from Kunming 昆明, with the collection point, walking expectations and return timing agreed in advance. Green Lake is a flexible extra if there is time and energy after returning to the city.
Crossing-the-bridge rice noodles make the evening food introduction in the artwork. I would choose the dinner stop around the hotel and the day’s return, leaving time to sit down and enjoy it.
Kunming 昆明 → Dali 大理
Let the mountains set the pace.
Take a morning train to Dali 大理, then transfer from the railway station to the hotel. I would confirm the exact Kunming 昆明 departure station and build the collection and check-in around the booked service.
Spend the afternoon getting to know Dali 大理 Old Town and visiting the Three Pagodas, with the order shaped by the train arrival and current entry arrangements. The mountain setting and courtyard streets give the day a different scale from Kunming 昆明.
The food artwork suggests grilled rushan cheese and a Bai-style dinner. I would use the first evening to introduce local dishes and find out what the traveler would like to explore further.
Xizhou 喜洲 & Erhai / Dali 大理 base
Take the scenic way through the day.
Keep the same Dali 大理 base for a day around Xizhou 喜洲 and Erhai’s western shore. Look closely at the courtyard houses, pause in the town’s streets and leave time for the landscape between the stops.
I would arrange a local driver for the wider loop, then choose a manageable stretch to walk or cycle. The distance, surface, permitted access and bike arrangements need to suit the traveler; the illustration is an invitation to a short lakeside outing, rather than an instruction to circle the entire lake.
Make room for Xizhou 喜洲 baba, sweet or savory, around Sifang Street. This is the sort of stop that belongs in the shape of the day, with time to order, eat and wander a little.
Dali 大理 → Lijiang 丽江
Follow the water in the old town.
Travel by morning train from Dali 大理 to Lijiang 丽江, then transfer to the hotel. I would confirm the practical arrival point with the property: a room in an old-town lane can involve a walk from the vehicle drop-off.
Explore the old town and Black Dragon Pool at a comfortable pace. Lijiang’s historic water system and settlement pattern are part of its World Heritage story, alongside building traditions shaped by Naxi and neighboring communities.
For the traveler who wants more historical context, I would arrange a guided introduction before leaving room to explore independently. The food collection adds a Naxi-style meal to the evening, with the restaurant selected around the final route and dietary preferences.
Baisha 白沙 & Shuhe 束河 / Lijiang 丽江 base
End with a little mountain air.
A local driver connects Baisha 白沙 and Shuhe 束河 for the final sightseeing day. I would allow time for village lanes, Baisha’s historic murals and a relaxed meal, checking access to the mural buildings before fixing the visit.
Baisha 白沙 and Shuhe 束河 are parts of the wider Lijiang 丽江 World Heritage property. Looking at them with the old town helps connect the journey’s architecture and history, with a guide where interpretation adds something useful.
Jidou bean jelly or another bowl of rice noodles can round out the food chapter. Keep the last night in Lijiang 丽江, then make the departure transfer the following morning. The mountain views depend on the weather; the village visits give the day a purpose of their own.
TASTE YUNNAN 云南 / KUNMING 昆明 & DALI 大理
A bowl. A street. A reason to stop.
The crossing-the-bridge noodle illustration starts the food story in Kunming 昆明; Xizhou 喜洲 baba carries it into Dali 大理 country. I use the artwork to make the meals part of the journey before the traveler arrives.
The original noodle poster names Jianxinyuan’s Jinbi branch, and the baba poster points to stalls around Xizhou’s Sifang Street. Those are campaign references to check against current local listings when arranging the actual meals.
TASTE YUNNAN 云南 / LIJIANG 丽江
Around a Lijiang 丽江 table.
Cured-rib hotpot, Naxi fried rice and jidou bean jelly give the Lijiang 丽江 collection three different food illustrations. There is room to discover a favorite across the two nights and the village day.
The original posters name A Ma Yi Naxi Cuisine near Xiaoshi Bridge on Wuyi Street. I would reconfirm the restaurant’s current Chinese map listing, opening arrangements and menu before using it in a dated itinerary, then choose dishes around appetite, dietary needs and the size of the group.
ARCHITECTURE, HISTORY & EVERYDAY PLACES
Look closer at the streets.
Dali 大理 and Xizhou 喜洲 introduce the courtyard architecture and Bai cultural context in the campaign. Around Lijiang 丽江, water channels, lanes and the villages of Baisha 白沙 and Shuhe 束河 offer another way into the region’s history.
I would choose local guides who can explain the buildings and their setting, ask before photographing people or entering private spaces, and leave time for the traveler’s own questions. A busy old town still rewards attention to a doorway, a bridge or the way a street follows the water.
The wider-province artwork includes rice terraces and imagined combinations of mountain scenery. This five-day route stays focused on Kunming 昆明, Dali 大理 and Lijiang 丽江. A rice-terrace journey would be an additional leg, with more days and its own transfers.
THE WORK BEHIND THE JOURNEY
The groundwork.
Make the five days genuinely available
I would confirm the inbound flight, Kunming 昆明 arrival transfer and evening-before hotel night first. The plan then needs six nights in total and a departure after the final Lijiang 丽江 night. An arrival during Day 1, or a return flight from Kunming 昆明, changes the transport and time required.
Book the right train and the right station
The two rail legs are Kunming 昆明 to Dali 大理 on Day 2 and Dali 大理 to Lijiang 丽江 on Day 4. I would check actual services through China Railway 12306, use the traveler’s correct document details and confirm station names, luggage arrangements and hotel collections. No train times or fares are fixed in this sample.
Choose useful hotel locations
I would compare the location and vehicle access of each hotel alongside the room and budget. In Dali 大理 and Lijiang 丽江, a railway station and an old-town hotel are separate transfer points. A beautiful lane-side address still needs a clear luggage and drop-off plan.
Use local partners where they add depth
A local destination-management partner can help coordinate drivers, hotel arrivals and guides across the three bases. I would agree the language of guiding, vehicle standard, meeting points, included entry arrangements and who is available if plans change. Shilin 石林, Xizhou 喜洲 and the Baisha 白沙–Shuhe 束河 loop call for different local arrangements.
Match the walking, weather and meals
I would shape the walking and any short cycle around mobility, surfaces, weather and the traveler’s interests. The mountain scenery is weather-dependent. Restaurant names and addresses printed in the artwork need current checks; dietary preferences and reservations belong in the final trip details.
Prepare the practical details before departure
Entry arrangements depend on the traveler and itinerary, so I would confirm them before booking. The trip notes should also bring together usable Chinese hotel addresses, local contacts, payment preparation, connectivity and offline copies of the important details. A companion guide can follow this same five-day sequence.
